DisneyLand’s Califnorina Adventure Cars Land is finally here

June 28, 2012

Disneyland will have a whole new meaning once you watch this video.

My family would go to Disney World once a year most years we took a year off here and there. The first time I went was in 1983 then 84, 87,91,93,95,98.

Normally we would go in November we would leave from Three Rivers, Michigan and  drive to Disney World. One thing we always hated was when a new ride was not open we would have to wait years sometimes.

I now only live about 45 min from Disneyland and I have been waiting for 3 years for the new improvements to Disneyland to be completed and it is now finally here.

From time to time, we’ve shared clips of some of the videos that have played in Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar at Disney California Adventure park. Some Disney Parks Blog readers have asked us to post the videos in their entirety, so today I’m excited to be able to feature two videos that have been featured recently in the preview center that has displayed the concepts from Walt Disney Imagineering throughout the expansion of the park.

Up first is a beautiful feature on the creative process behind the design and construction of Cars Land, in which you hear from Imagineers themselves on the inspiration, emotion and rewards of building such an immersive experience for guests. Grab a tissue!

Disneyland reopens the classic Disney ride the Matterhorn 2012

June 27, 2012

My family never went to Disneyland we were a Disney World family but my mom use to tell me about the Matterhorn. My grandparents went to Disneyland in the late 50’s they were going to move to California but my grandpa got sun burned and changed his mind and went back home.

50 years later I made the move to California I always really enjoyed the Matterhorn too the problem is that it always seem to break down over the past year or so.

I’m looking forward getting back on it and seeing the changes.

What are your thoughts on the updates please share below in the comments =)

Matterhorn Bobsleds reopens at Disneyland with enhanced Yeti effects, mountain climbers, and single (but small) seats

After six months of downtime for updates, Disneyland recently reopened its iconic Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction. The classic ride looks and sounds better than ever, with updated lighting and sound effects for its famous abominable snowmen and a welcome back to the tradition of mountain climbers scaling its freshly repainted terrain.

But its new ride vehicles have been the hot topic since the attraction closed for refurbishment in January 2012, replacing the decades-old, two-to-a-seat configuration with individual seats. Now that the new cars have debuted, many riders have found them to be a bit too cramped for comfort.

The video below takes you on a full ride on the left and right sides of the Matterhorn Bobsleds, fresh from refurbishment, also offering a closer look at the new ride vehicles and the mountain climbers.

To the tune of yodelers and plenty of polka, Disneyland makes a big deal about the mountain climbers who are once again ascending and descending the mountain, accompanied by the voice of Disneyland, Bill Rogers, periodically updating guests on their “progress.” The occasional daily event commands the attention of everyone around the mountain.

Distant growls of the Yetis within the icy caverns of the Matterhorn can also be heard throughout the surrounding area, louder than ever, piquing the curiosity of those who have never dared to come face to face with the menacing creature. Colorful lighting and strobe lights compliment these roars while on the ride, all combining to give guests a good startle when rounding a corner toward one of these fearsome beasts.

To do so now requires stepping aboard the updated bobsled vehicles. Similar in appearance and configuration to those in Space Mountain at Walt Disney World in Orlando, the new vehicles no longer require guests to seat in each other’s laps, sharing a seatbelt. Instead, each guest gets their own seat, with signs posted indicating the change.

But many who have ridden since the ride reopened (myself included) have discovered the new seats to be small, not so much in width but more in length, leaving very little leg room. The trains have two cars, each holding 3 passengers. The front seats of each of these cars have no room for riders to stretch their legs, instead requiring knees to remain bent and legs quite upright. Those in the rear two seats of each car will enjoy a bit more leg room, though the foot holes are also tiny, making it difficult to squeeze into and out of.

Moreover, the new vehicles do not provide any additional cushion or shock absorption over the previous ones, so the Matterhorn Bobsleds retains its signature (and not appreciated by all) bumpy ride. As seen in the video above, the ride certainly jerks passengers around, particularly in the back seat, which some thrill seekers will appreciate, while others will leave unsatisfied.

Guests may not have to wait long to try out the new cars though, as the best addition to the Matterhorn Bobsleds is the Single Rider line. Those who don’t mind riding separately from their friends and family a chance to board with little to no waiting, though it will take a bit of searching to find the proper entrance to this new line among the winding queue rows.

Matterhorn Bobsleds 2012 update

With the return of this classic attraction, those brave enough to conquer the new Matterhorn Bobsleds will be rewarded with a ride through Disneyland history, albeit a bumpy one, featuring frequent face-offs with those famous Yetis within. You might not return without a backache, but it’ll be worth it.

New Hidden Mickey Pins Coming This Summer to Disney Parks

The arrival of summer at Disney Parks means that new Hidden Mickey pins will be released for trading. You may recall I gave you a look at the first wave of these pins in January. For the past several years, we have split the Hidden Mickey pins into two different waves, with unique pins found at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. I spoke with Julie Young, developer for Hidden Mickey pins, about her favorite pins coming to Disneyland Resort.

“I am happy to feature Oswald the Lucky Rabbit on a pin,” exclaimed Julie. “He is part of a 12-pin collection with artwork from the construction fence that was recently found at Disney California Adventure park. The fence artwork was entertainment and made for a nice nod to Disney history.”

There will be 42 different pins released at Disneyland Resort. As with the first wave, Julie selected 10 of those 42 pins to be silver-colored chaser pins.

For Walt Disney World Resort, there will be 45 different pins released, including 10 of those pins as silver-colored chasers.

I’ve officially dubbed Julie as “queen of the Mickey Mouse icon pin,” as she has been developing a variety of these pins for years. I wasn’t surprised to see an icon collection for Walt Disney World Resort, which Julie said was her favorite.

“I enjoy designing pins using the Mickey Mouse icon,” continued Julie. “I’m also a big fan of The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park. For the cast member costume pins, I combined my two interests into one pin. I love the entire icon collection this year, and it has inspired me to possibly expand the collection next year.”

Please let there be an Epcot Center jumpsuit costume pin in 2013!

As for my favorite pins, I liked the popcorn turner collection, including one pin featuring a legendary character from the Matterhorn at Disneyland park. I’m also thrilled to see more Figment pins, the White Rabbit, Timothy from “Dumbo” and my friend Duffy the Disney Bear (which I mentioned in a previous article).

Look for these pins on cast members’ lanyards in the coming weeks at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. You can download checklists of these pins by visiting the official Disney Pin Trading website – Disney.com/Pins.

Happy Trading!

Disney World’s Fort Wilderness new attraction inspired by “Brave”

June 25, 2012

When ever my family would go to Disney World we would always stay at Fort Wilderness. There was more to do for kids than staying at the resorts.

Disney Fort Wilderness has a new activity inspired by the new Disney Summer Movie for 2012 “Brave”.

In 2012, the time-honored sport of archery has been right on target. Several silver-screen blockbusters have featured skilled archers (including the newest Disney•Pixar hit “Brave,” with Princess Merida). Add to that mix the archery competition at this year’s Olympic Games, and it seems the bow and arrow have made a big comeback.

Did you know that Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground offers archery lessons on its lengthy menu of recreational programs?

The resort has always been one of my favorite places to play. I’ve ridden horses, played shuffleboard, fished, jogged, watched a movie under the stars, roasted marshmallows, played some tennis and even taken a horse-drawn holiday sleigh ride through the 750-acre wooded resort. (Check out this page for a complete list of recreational offerings.)

But I’ve never tried my hand at archery, until now. Take a look at this short video, as I get to pretend the lush surroundings near Magic Kingdom Park are my very own Scottish forest.

The resort’s archery instructors introduce you to the sport, teaching you safety and the basic skills you need before letting you try to nail the bullseye yourself. And one of the best things? You won’t have to worry about Harris, Hubert or Hamish pocketing any pastries while you’re enjoying your lesson.
